Sonnet 5 Goes Default & Fable 5 Returns Globally

Sonnet 5 Goes Default & Fable 5 Returns Globally — visual for 2026-07-01

🧭 Claude Sonnet 5 Is Now the Default Model for Free, Pro, Team Standard, and Enterprise

One day after launch, Claude Sonnet 5 became the default model across every Free and Pro seat on claude.ai, as well as Team Standard and Enterprise plans. Anyone who hasn't manually pinned a specific model is now talking to Sonnet 5 by default — with its native 1M-token context window and adaptive thinking switched on automatically, no configuration required.

If you'd pinned Sonnet 4.6 for a reason, check that reason still holds

Teams that explicitly locked their default to Sonnet 4.6 (for cost predictability, latency characteristics, or output consistency reasons) should revisit that pin now that 5 is both cheaper at introductory pricing and benchmarks higher across the board — the original reason for pinning may no longer apply.

🧭 Claude Fable 5 Returns to Global Availability

Claude Fable 5 — suspended in mid-June under a US government export control directive covering Fable 5 and Mythos 5 — returned to global availability. The restoration follows the targeted, proportionate approach Anthropic had signalled at the time of suspension: specific capability restrictions rather than a blanket, indefinite pull of the model, resolved once the underlying export control review concluded.

What this resolves for developers who had migrated away

Teams that switched workloads off Fable 5 during the suspension window can now evaluate moving back, though it's worth re-testing rather than assuming behaviour is identical to pre-suspension — any capability restrictions applied as part of the resolution may not be fully documented in the initial restoration announcement.
